I don't think I could have had a better reception, even if I'd had months to prepare. It was really great. Our car wasn't even trashed too badly. Our friends covered the windows with Oreo cookies and tied cans to the bumper. The best part was the barbie doll tied to the hood of our car. I can't wait for some of our friends to get married so we can pass her on.
Craig and I shared our first dance together as a married couple while everyone watched. We danced to "Lost in this Moment" by Big & Rich. I still smile every time I hear that song.
Then we opened up the dance floor to the rest of the guests. We had some really fun songs playing like the Boot Scootin' Boogie and Born to Hand Jive. It was a ton of fun to be outside dancing like a fool on such a beautiful day.
Now it was time to get back to the traditional stuff. We started with a toast from the best man, Craig's brother Matt.
Now it was time for Craig to remove my garter with his teeth. He wasn't bashful at all.
Then it was my turn to select the next bride by tossing my bouquet.
How great that Charles, my ex boyfriend from high school, was the one to catch my garter? Ellery put up quite a fight to make sure that she was the one to catch my bouquet.
Finally it was time to cut the cake. Now, before I go any further, I want to tell you the story behind our cake. I've never been a fan of wedding cakes. They are expensive and only meant for decoration. I haven't been to many wedding where they actually serve the cake so it seems like such a waste of money. Well, Craig loves the tradition of cutting the cake so he really wanted one. We compromised with a tiny little cake that we would bake ourselves and so we wouldn't have the stress, but we'd still have the tradition.
While we at Gigi's looking for the right size of cake pan for our wedding cake, Craig's ex landlords offered to make the cake for us as their gift. I truly expected a little white cake, single layer, maybe 5 inches in diameter. Well, as you can see from the picture above, they went way above and beyond. It was beautiful. It was three tiers with white icing and crushed peppermint candy canes sprinkled all over. Then they added tons of roses and a cute little couple on top. It was gorgeous. It was almost hard to cut into it. At least I have plenty of pictures of it so I can remember exactly what it looked like.
I hate it when brides have spent so much time on their hair and makeup and then the groom smashed cake everywhere so the bride has to disappear for a while while she cleans herself up. It just doesn't seem very nice. So Craig and I made a deal with each other before the wedding. If I was nice to him while feeding him the cake, then he would be nice to me. We both kept up our end of the bargain, although Craig did wait until I let go of the cake before he'd put his piece down in case I decided to go back on my word. I can feel the love.
Finally it was all over. After the reception died down enough, our closest friends and family helped us all clean up. Oddly enough, South Jordan City was having some sort of celebration not too far away, so while we were cleaning up we got to listen to the wonderful sounds of a demolition derby. It seemed very fitting. Then, as we finished unwrapping our gifts the sky behind us lit up with fireworks. It was incredible! How many people get fireworks on their wedding. It was a perfect way to end the evening.
